Senior Spotlight: Coco King — Spreading Joy, One Slime at a Time

Senior Spotlight: Coco King — Spreading Joy, One Slime at a Time

On a sun-lit November morning inside a classroom at The DREAM Center in Cabarete, Dominican Republic, senior Coco King knelt beside a group of children who watched her with pure anticipation. Tiny hands hovered over bowls as Coco poured glue, stirred activator, and gently folded in color and beads. As the mixture transformed into bright, bouncy slime, the room filled with squeals, laughter, and wide-eyed amazement. Even the teachers peeked in, smiling as they asked if they could have a container of their own.

Seeing the kids’ reaction is a big sign of success for me,” Coco said. “It made me realize that something relatively simple that I have knowledge of can bring so much joy to people all over the world. And not just kids,  the teachers loved it, too.”

Coco spent the week serving at The DREAM Center, a school supported by the nonprofit DREAM Project. Founded in response to overcrowded and underserved schools, DREAM now educates more than 6,500 children and youth each year through literacy programs, early childhood education, youth leadership, music instruction, and community support. Their mission is simple yet powerful: to provide high-quality educational opportunities and empower students to create a better future.

For Coco, contributing something personal to that mission felt meaningful. She wanted to share a part of herself; her creativity, her passion, and her entrepreneurial spirit.

Where Her Story Began

Coco’s love for slime started when she was just ten years old. Every weekend, she and her friends would spend hours experimenting with colors, textures, and ingredients.

“As I started making more and more slime, I realized I should start selling it since I loved making it,” she said.

Six months later, she opened her first Etsy shop. She attended slime expos, learned how the industry worked, and practiced until she perfected her craft.

For the first two years, she received only a few orders, mostly from family and friends. But even then, she stayed committed.

Turning Passion Into a Business

In 2020, when she was twelve, everything changed. Coco launched social media accounts to promote her products, and interest began to grow. She received her first official order, then her first overseas order, and realized she was building something real.

By ninth grade, she created her first website. When it didn’t gain traction, she didn’t quit. She rebuilt her brand through Shopify, refined her marketing, and stayed patient.

Today, six years after her first experiment with glue and beads, Coco has sold thousands of slimes through her Etsy shop and website, Coco’s Slime Factory. She has built a loyal customer base, an impressive social media following, and a business grounded in creativity and joy.

Being an entrepreneur comes with a lot of responsibility,” she said. “Time management is everything. I’ve learned to use setbacks as motivation and to stay patient. Success doesn’t happen overnight.”

Bringing Her Passion to the Dominican Republic

When preparing for the Upper School service trip, Coco wanted to offer something unique — something she knew would spark creativity and excitement. Bringing her slime ingredients felt like the perfect fit.

“The kids were so excited. None of them had ever played with slime before,” she said. “They loved watching me make it and then trying it themselves.”

What struck her most was the connection she was able to build without words. Through gestures, smiles, and hands-on participation, the children communicated curiosity, joy, and gratitude.

“It showed me that sharing something I love can have a big impact,” she said. “That week changed the way I see my business, my future, and even the world.”
